Fun – MONSTERS 2010 – Movie

2010/10/18

Saturday 16th October 2010.

Tonight I am taken to a screening at the Apollo in Picadilly Circus by the lovely Lou. After stocking up on sweet popcorn and water, we are headed to the dark room and find our seats in the very first front row.

It is the Sci-Fi London Oktober Fest and Gareth Edwards is the winner of a 48 hours challenge were he proved his talent by filming a movie of quality within these 48 hours & the company running the competition then allowed him to do this movie, at a low budget of around $15 000 that mixes both drama and science fiction.

Monsters was part of the Southby Southwest Festival earlier this year and meant to be released in US theatres on the 29th October 2010.

Gareth succeeds here in expressing love, fear, sadness and beauty through a drama and love story mixed with aliens that can be both scary and majestic.

Set up in Mexico, South America, this is the adventures of two young Americans: Andrew Kaulder  (Scoot McNairy) & Samantha (Whitney Able) trying to reach their native country in a period of crisis, where they have to brave nature and (alien) infected zones.

Mixed feelings and new horizons, I like to think that this movie allows each spectator to think about what they have acquired and want from life – but also know that the present is here and that it is never late for a change and new experiences.

Gareth Edwards and Colin Goudie were present tonight and a question and answers session followed the screening of the movie, explaining about how Gareth‘s background of Special Effects helped him with the realization of Monsters, that he was always a Director but entered a career of Visual Effects for about ten years in the prospect of being able to realize his own movies someday. Well here he is presenting his first one tonight!

Colin was also present on the set but mostly editing – After a few months in Mexico they then went back to UK to edit some more and back again to Mexico to shoot the much needed missing scenes and finish all the filming.

They explain how they chose where the movie had to be set up and how some of the effects were made, along some funny anecdotes.

A nice movie that does not scare you after all but give you a certain perspective of things – GO SEE IT WHEN ITS OUT – In US theatres on the 29th October 2010!
